WHAT IS EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing
EMDR is a therapy that changes the way traumatic material is stored. One way people process disturbing events is through rapid eye movement (REM) when they sleep. EMDR uses the these eye movements during a conscious state. The material loses its emotional charge and is stored in a more adaptive way
EMDR IS EFFECTIVE FOR:
TRAUMA
INSOMNIA
PTSD
MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS
PANIC ATTACKS
GRIEF
ANXIETY
DISTURBING MEMORIES
PHOBIAS
EMOTIONAL ABUSE
ADDICTION
SEXUAL AND/OR PHYSICAL ABUSE
EFFECTS OF TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCES:
Recurrent, distressing memories
Reliving the traumatic event
Avoiding thinking or talking about an event & places, people that remind you of it
Negative thoughts about yourself like feeling depressed and having anxiety
Being “stuck” and feeling emotionally numb
Insomnia & headaches
Feeling on guard or easily startled
Self destructive behaviour like drinking too much
